It is with much joy that I submit...
It is with much joy that I submit this testimony of the healing and redemptive power of Christian Science. I first heard of this teaching when a very young woman. I was when in a bad state of health, suffering from acute nervous trouble and a weak chest. I was unable to go out or stay in a house alone, attend large gatherings, or travel in trains. Life was indeed a cramped and unhappy state from which I longed to escape.
I sought in various churches and chapels for the peace which I believed was to be found in a knowledge of God. My love and reverence for the life and teachings of our Master were sincere. I believed myself to be a child of God, but could not understand why sorrow and suffering should play such an active part in the lives of most people. At this time I met an old friend whom I had not seen for two years. She had then been a great sufferer from acute sciatica and was taking treatment at one of the London hospitals. Now, however, she had no trace of ill-health. This was wonderful to me, and I asked her what had brought about such a great change. She was unable to explain the method, but said that if I would like to enquire into the teaching she would ask a friend to show me where I could borrow some literature. I said that I would let her know the next day.
On reaching home I found that I had received in the mail a magazine from my sister. I found it to be a copy of The Christian Science Journal. My sister said that she had lately met a man who had been a sufferer from chronic illness but had been healed by Christian Science. She knew nothing about it herself, but thought that I might like to find out about it. I at once thought that it must be the same thing of which my friend had spoken. The next day I met her friend and together we went to the Reading Room.
