It is with much joy that I submit...
It is with much joy that I submit this testimony of the healing and redemptive power of Christian Science. I first heard of this teaching when a very young woman. I was when in a bad state of health, suffering from acute nervous trouble and a weak chest. I was unable to go out or stay in a house alone, attend large gatherings, or travel in trains. Life was indeed a cramped and unhappy state from which I longed to escape.
I sought in various churches and chapels for the peace which I believed was to be found in a knowledge of God. My love and reverence for the life and teachings of our Master were sincere. I believed myself to be a child of God, but could not understand why sorrow and suffering should play such an active part in the lives of most people. At this time I met an old friend whom I had not seen for two years. She had then been a great sufferer from acute sciatica and was taking treatment at one of the London hospitals. Now, however, she had no trace of ill-health. This was wonderful to me, and I asked her what had brought about such a great change. She was unable to explain the method, but said that if I would like to enquire into the teaching she would ask a friend to show me where I could borrow some literature. I said that I would let her know the next day.
On reaching home I found that I had received in the mail a magazine from my sister. I found it to be a copy of The Christian Science Journal. My sister said that she had lately met a man who had been a sufferer from chronic illness but had been healed by Christian Science. She knew nothing about it herself, but thought that I might like to find out about it. I at once thought that it must be the same thing of which my friend had spoken. The next day I met her friend and together we went to the Reading Room.
I was greatly impressed by the calmness and assurance of the librarian. When she told me that God is All and man is His perfect child it seemed impossible to doubt her words. The textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was lent to me, and I returned home in a hopeful and happy state of mind. I now see that from the time I first started to study this book a change of thought began to take place.
Instead of turning to relations and friends to comfort and help me in times of stress, I now know the joy of turning to God and finding His love is indeed ever present and all-powerful. Not only have we had many physical healings in Christian Science, but discords of all kinds have been properly adjusted by this wonderful truth. The physical healings have included those of varicose ulcers on the legs, a badly sprained back and ankle, supposedly inherited abscesses in the ears, and many so-called children's complaints.
A very deep cut over the eye of the little girl was healed in a few days, although those who saw the accident said that only stitches could hold such a wound together. When she was brought in to me I sent the people away, laid her on the sofa, put a cloth over the wound, and said, "Now we will say the first verse of 'Mother's Evening Prayer'" (Poems, by Mrs. Eddy, p. 4). The crying stopped as we repeated that verse together. In half an hour from the time of the accident she was sitting up enjoying a meal. She went to school the next day, and by the end of the week the wound had closed and the eyebrow was almost normal.
The great power of Truth was a wonderful comfort to me during the war when my son was in service. I am more grateful than I can say for all the love and protection that he has experienced and for the fact that he was able to use his understanding of Christian Science during those days of conflict and difficulty. I have an increasing love and reverence for our dear Leader, who made this teaching available to us all.—(Mrs.) Amy L. Wells, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
It gives me great pleasure to corroborate my mother's testimony. I am very grateful to God for Christian Science and for all the joy that has come into my life through the activities of the movement.
