During the period of nineteen...
During the period of nineteen months' overseas duty in an infantry rifle company, I had many definite, concrete proofs of the protection afforded one through the study and application of the truths contained in the Christian Science textbook. "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. When I departed for overseas duty my wife presented me with a copy of the servicemen's edition of Science and Health, and a Christian Science Wartime Minister gave me a copy of the service edition of the Bible. I carried these books with me during the entire time overseas, and read them at every opportunity afforded me.
My regiment participated in the landing at Casablanca, in North Africa, and the invasion of Sicily, and relieved the division which invaded Salerno. Italy, five days after D-Day. It was while fighting in Italy, just north of Caserta, that I had a conclusive proof of the protection afforded by my understanding of Christian Science. One night "Jerry" started laying down a barrage on our company area. The enemy gun position was so close that we could hear the report from the guns at the time the shells left the barrels, and then waited while they whistled toward us. One of these shells struck a tree just above the ditch in which I was lying, and burst, but I was not touched, although I could see the red-hot shrapnel alongside my helmet when I got up.
Another proof which I had that divine Mind was guiding and directing me in making correct decisions was the protection that I experienced against German Teller land mines. One rainy day we took a truck up a road that had not been cleared of mines, to a point where one of our jeeps had been blown up. After we had completed the job assigned to us, my driver wanted to turn around a short distance ahead. I felt definitely guided to direct him to back down the road over which we had come until we came to a clearing and turn around there. The next day the wisdom of my decision was confirmed, as a mine blew up at the point where my driver had wanted to turn around the day before. I am profoundly grateful for this proof of the governing of divine Mind which protected me and those with whom I was serving.
