I believe that a normal growth...

I believe that a normal growth in the understanding of Christian Science requires participation, where at all possible, in the activities of a Christian Science church organization. For many years, in my profession as a musician, my hours of work were such as to make almost impossible any such active affiliation. I felt this so deeply that I prayed that my work might be changed, if need be, that I might achieve that end. Little did I realize that the answer to my prayer would force me to learn, through the school of experience, that material values do not represent true substance; that God supplies every human need; that the primary of that supply is entirely spiritual, in no way attached to, nor cognizant of, matter.

Shortly before the period known as the depression I had risen to a responsible position, and had accumulated some of this world's goods. I had still, however, to learn the true meaning of substance.

Expediency prompted me to resign my position. Two roads were open to me: one was to continue in the same branch of my profession; the other was to seek some other business that would offer the time I desired for church work. I chose the latter. For many months I tried various ventures. These were unsuccessful, and I learned that I must await God's unerring guidance as to place and ways and means. For a few days I sought the aid of a practitioner. Then I became convinced that to make the advancement I desired, I must dig my own way out of the mire.
