Gratitude for inspiration, encouragement,...

Gratitude for inspiration, encouragement, and help received from the testimonies in the Christian Science periodicals over a period of many years prompts me to share my earliest experience in Christian Science. I particularly desire to reach those who are just beginning its study, and who may doubt that they yet know enough of Truth to demonstrate it.

This experience proved unmistakably that the truth we know, we can use, provided we are honest, in earnest, and unremittingly persistent in its application. In "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" Mary Baker Eddy has said (p. 518), "Love giveth to the least spiritual idea might, immortality, and goodness, which shine through all as the blossom shines through the bud."

While visiting relatives in Boston during a widespread epidemic of infantile paralysis, when I was a young girl, I awakened one morning quite ill and suffering from strange and peculiar symptoms. I said nothing about this and tried to appear as usual, even attending with great effort a holiday luncheon being given that day. During the luncheon the subject most talked of everywhere came up—infantile paralysis. Growing fear tempted me to enquire what the symptoms were. The answer I received sentenced me then and there. The symptoms were mine. I felt then that I understood the expression "paralyzed with fear."
