The True Nature of Employment

Many people today are perturbed lest there should be a trade depression when this war ends. Remembering the large number of unemployed a few years ago, they rightly desire to prevent a recurrence of any similar event.

The Christian Scientist knows that the only way to deal with this problem is by individual demonstration. Mary Baker Eddy, our Leader, in "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," says (p. 3), "The Divine Being must be reflected by man,—else man is not the image and likeness of the patient, tender, and true, the One 'altogether lovely;' but to understand God is the work of eternity, and demands absolute consecration of thought, energy, and desire." Thus we see that God, the only creator, has given His children endless employment, and as we honestly strive to express more Godlike qualities in our business, we shall find that we have very important work to do.

Man, the image and likeness of God, is never for an instant without employment, because he must always express the activity of God, Mind. As we understand more of the significance of this fact, we find that our progress is measured according to the good we have done. The work of expressing God is not subject to unfair competition, for one idea of God does not compete selfishly with another. God, the only Mind, governs all in the divine economy. All have the opportunity of proving man's oneness with God, who has declared (Rev. 22:12), "My reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be."
