"Love thy neighbour as thyself"

In his epistle to the Galatians (5:14), Paul admonishes, "For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself."

As precious and effectual as this "word" has always been to seekers of Truth, it remained for Christian Science clearly to interpret its full signification by setting forth the meaning of "thyself" as Christ Jesus used it in this commandment (Matt. 19:19). He who follows the Way-shower's instructions may well ask, "Who or what is this 'thyself of whom Jesus speaks?" A complete answer to this inquiry is found in the revelation of man's true selfhood as the perfect idea of God.

In the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" (p. 294), Mary Baker Eddy clearly defines "thyself" when she states. "Man's genuine selfhood is recognizable only in what is good and true." All who accept the revelation of Christian Science are learning, through varying experiences, more and more of man's genuine selfhood, and thus are able to fulfill the law.
