Evil Is Not Valid

Regarding her discovery of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy says in "Miscellaneous Writings" (pp. 222, 223), "While the ways, means, and potency of Truth had flowed into my consciousness as easily as dawns the morning light and shadows flee, the metaphysical mystery of error—its hidden paths, purpose, and fruits—at first defied me." However, this great woman was never one to hesitate when Truth directed, and so dauntlessly she took up research into the so-called mysteries of evil. She exposed fearlessly its whole fantastic deception from the audacious assumption that man is a creator to the illusion of his inglorious termination in death.

The ignorance and mental darkness externalized in material conditions and physical bodies have no more actuality than the shadowy, substanceless characters of the cinema. A darkened room is required to render visible the projections of the motion picture on the screen. But this picture grows dim and indistinguishable under strong light. Similarly, it is in darkened, mist-enshrouded thought that mortal mind projects its falsities. They fade out in the light of Truth.

The grim dramas of war and destruction, the fury of nature, the pains and tragedies, as well as the alluring pleasures which have been accepted throughout what is designated "the ages," have been but the would-be master productions of mortal mind. Its method is to mesmerize human consciousness, holding it wrapped in illusions, thereby shutting out realities. In the world today it is exhibiting such a show of disruption and suffering, through earth's actors, that there are few who remain unaffected by it.
