Leaving Idols
Jesus
said, "Follow me,"
And straightway then they left their nets and followed him.
So came the thought, If Jesus called to me,
Would I straightway go,
Leave all, my gatherings of the years,
To follow him who taught pure truth,
Leave all this complex, grasping self,
Have no other gods than my Father-Mother,
And love my neighbor as myself?
I knew not.
Then came to me the call, "Follow me."
I cried, "There is so much to do—later, perhaps.
Others are gaining earthly treasures, yet serving Truth.
Cannot I do so too?"
Time-bound, my idols were shattered at my feet.
"Seek ye first the kingdom of God"—
This is the rule. Obedient then, I knew
Spirit, alone, my substance and my all;
And meekly followed in the way
Of the Christ.
