Although I have used only Christian Science all my life, it remained for my present experience in the Army to awaken me to the necessity of doing more conscientious daily mental work.

At the outset I should like to express gratitude for the unselfish work of the earnest and able Christian Science Wartime Ministers available at all the posts to which I have been assigned. One instance which stands out occurred while I was a student at an officer candidate school in the Midwest. I had long tried to overcome many little difficulties which seemed to block my progress in being selected, and at last I saw the coveted commission within my grasp.

One day during this training, I noticed I was not as alert as usual, and when other men reported my condition an officer ordered my removal to a local hospital. I recall a short ride and being put to bed. Ten days later I regained consciousness, and learned that I had been transferred to a larger hospital many miles away, the better for the medical authorities to diagnose and combat the difficulty. I had lost over forty pounds. My first concern was to notify my family. Then I found that a faithful Christian Science practitioner had visited me regularly, working quietly in the hallway outside my door when orderlies would not allow him to enter because of quarantine regulations.
