Excerpts from Letters Concerning Christian Science Wartime Activities

[From a Christian Science Wartime Minister]

A soldier called on me one Saturday evening to tell me that another boy whom we know had been taken to the station hospital that day because of an acute attack of appendicitis. He said a surgical operation would be performed Monday morning. I went to see the patient Sunday afternoon. For several weeks I had seen him frequently and we talked about Christian Science during these visits. His interest was becoming apparent slowly but surely. He seldom failed to attend our service in the post chapel on Tuesday evenings. I talked with him for an hour in the hospital, and when I was leaving he asked that I continue to help him.

The next day I called to see him: it was Monday afternoon. He told me something had happened, though it was not clear to him except that he knew the medical officer was surprised to find his condition was greatly improved. He said he did not think they were going to operate after all. I told him that, God being All-in-all there are no means or methods apart from Him, and that His intelligence, His action, power, and law, are all that operate. He told me he had thought of God as the only Physician, the only real healer, and that He never fails.
