Opening Their Eyes to See

To most of us who have found in the teachings of Christian Science a new way of life, an understanding of God and of man's relationship to Him with its attendant blessings of healing and harmony, comes the desire to share this truth with our relatives and friends. So glorious is its promise, so overwhelming our joy, that we long to stand on the housetops and shout it to the world. But sometimes to our dismay we find that many do not wish to hear the good news, although they may be sorely in need of healing.

In one home peace and happiness had taken the place of sickness and sorrow, and all the members of that family, save one, had accepted the teachings of Christian Science and had become faithful students, applying the truth to their every need. The one who was unwilling to accept it seemed to be constantly ailing, always seeking new treatment to give her health, and never finding it.

One of the other members of the family had given much thought to this, and one day when the need appeared greater than ever she turned once again in earnest prayer to God for guidance. The words of Elisha to his servant flashed into her thought, "Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see." Pondering thoughtfully this message, she saw that even Elisha, a prophet of God, with his clear understanding of the situation, did not feel he could take it upon himself to reveal the truth, but in humility he prayed to God to do so. "And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw" (II Kings 6:17). At once she recognized that the lesson to be learned was one of humility—humility that takes nought of power to itself, but humbly prays to the Father of all to meet the need. This lesson was taken to heart, and there came to the student a sense of peace and harmony, and the quiet assurance that God governs.
