I was a thorough disbeliever in...
I was a thorough disbeliever in Christian Science. I had once heard of someone who had tried Christian Science and had failed to receive help, and whenever anyone mentioned it to me I repeated this story. I had been a semi-invalid practically from childhood, suffering from nervous stomach trouble and periodical fainting spells.
At the time of my healing, I was living in a hotel in the West. A sister whom I had not seen for a very long time came to visit me. One day she brought a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy to me and asked if I would like to read it. I replied, "No, I am not interested." A little later a woman, a Christian Scientist who lived at the same hotel, asked if I would like to take a walk with her to see a friend. I doubted my ability to walk that far, but not wanting to be disagreeable I joined her. When we were nearing the house, she said that her friend was a Christian Science practitioner, and she was going to have a treatment. The practitioner and her mother were introduced to me, and then my friend disappeared, leaving me alone with the mother. I noticed she was doing some very fine needlework without glasses. She told me she had been able to leave off her glasses after coming into Christian Science, and I was impressed.
When my friend and the practitioner returned, the latter said she would like to talk to me about the Bible. This interested me, as I thought I was quite a Bible student. When I went into her room she said I did not have to be ill, that Christian Science could heal me. I laughed at her and said, "You think you can heal me when I have been treated by the best doctors in this country and in Europe and they have never been able to heal me?" She inquired if I believed what I read in the Bible, and I said, "Some of it." She told me that a Christian Science treatment consisted of prayer. I consented to have her give me one, thinking, It cannot do me any harm and neither can it do me any good, but I shall agree and then I can get out of here. After a few minutes she opened her eyes and said, "I am sure you will feel better." I smiled cynically and thanked her.
