The great light which dawned...
The great light which dawned upon my consciousness twenty years ago, when I first began to study Christian Science, has ever been with me from that time to this. I can recount in this testimony only a few of the many blessings that have been mine during these years.
About a year before my introduction to Christian Science I suffered a severe nervous collapse due to overwork in the teaching profession and worry caused by the death of a loved one. I became so weak that it was impossible for me to resume teaching for about six months. During this time I gradually lost all faith in materia medica and religion, and even got to the place where I was very bitter towards a God who, I was taught to believe, allowed these difficulties to come to us for some wise purpose. I had been reared in a religious home and attended an orthodox church regularly, but I lost confidence in almost everything and everybody. My whole world had toppled about me, and I knew not where to turn for help and comfort.
At this point I was invited by a friend, a girl of about sixteen years of age who attended the Christian Science Sunday School, to hear a lecture on Christian Science. I accepted eagerly, for I had been searching in many directions, without results, for an explanation of my difficulties, and had a great desire to understand the meaning of existence. While I had no recollection of the lecturer's message that evening, I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I had at last found the "pearl of great price" (Matt. 13:46), and that I need search no farther for complete satisfaction and happiness.
