Overcoming Temptation

[Of Special Interest to Children]

There are many instances recorded in the Bible of overcoming temptation through reliance upon the Word of God. Jesus was tempted by the devil (error) to worship him instead of God. Jesus was very firm in his denial of the seeming power of evil, and silenced the tempter by the command, "Get thee hence, Satan." Then the devil left him, and "angels came and ministered unto him." Mary Baker Eddy defines "angels" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 581) as "God's thoughts passing to man."

What is this tempter called devil? Christian Science shows us clearly that it is mortal mind, the opposite of divine Mind.

Jesus was able to overcome every claim of evil, because he knew that evil has only the power we give it, through believing it and fearing it. It has no activity of its own. Mrs. Eddy tells us in Science and Health (p. 228): "There is no power apart from God. Omnipotence has all-power, and to acknowledge any other power is to dishonor God."
