Healing by Teaching

"The student who heals by teaching and teaches by healing, will graduate under divine honors, which are the only appropriate seals for Christian Science." In these words from her "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 358) Mary Baker Eddy makes it plain that she expected teaching and healing to go hand in hand. Therefore in teaching in the Christian Science Sunday School, should not healing be our goal?

The Christian Scientist who has dedicated himself to this task wisely begins with the clear realization that God alone is the teacher. With great gratitude and humility he daily searches his textbooks—the Bible, together with "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" and Mrs. Eddy's other writings—for the ever-new inspiration of Spirit. By using the Concordances he opens his thought frequently to what the Scriptures and our Leader have to say about "teacher," "teach," "teaching," and so on. He knows that such references and others, as for instance those referring to Sunday school and children, are important not only to the newly appointed teacher, but also to the one who has enjoyed many years of experience in this field of honor.

Clad in the armor of meekness he dares to claim that every child, yes, even the one who outwardly shows little sign, of interest in spiritual things, is inwardly thirsty and hungry for the divine utterances which he himself has gleaned from these God-given books. He realizes that if he is to give food and drink from his own storehouse to these little ones, then great must be his garner.
