Five years ago I knew very...
Five years ago I knew very little about Christian Science. I had tried to read "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, but my critical attitude prevented me from understanding it. Still I felt vaguely that nothing else could lift me out of the state of nervousness and melancholy in which several major operations had left me.
One day I was led to visit the superintendent of a Christian Science Sunday School, because I was interested to know how Christian Science is explained to children. I was deeply impressed by the joy and love this woman reflected. We were living in the Far East at that time, and shortly after my visit to the Sunday school superintendent our home country, Holland, was invaded and capitulated to the Germans. I was terribly shocked by this news. Moreover, we expected the war in the Pacific to start at any moment. My fear that I was going to lose everything dear to me was so great that I could neither eat nor sleep.
Then I thought of the Christian Scientist whom I had recently met and I asked her for help. She offered to treat me in Christian Science. I did not know what it was all about, but I soon felt calm again. My thought was receptive, and I began to drink in everything I heard and read about this Science. I became more and more convinced that nothing else would be able to save me and the whole world from all evil. I began to get up at five in the morning to study the Lesson-Sermon, subscribed for the periodicals, and began to attend church regularly.
