To the glory of God, and in...
To the glory of God, and in heartfelt gratitude to our Way-shower, Christ Jesus, to our beloved Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, and to the consecrated practitioners who are rendering such valiant service to humanity, I give the following testimony.
I had always been an ardent student of the Bible and an active member of the orthodox church in which I had been reared, but in 1932 I found myself dissatisfied with my religious life. I suffered from one physical difficulty after another. In a conversation with a friend who was a Christian Scientist, she remarked that our only need is spiritual. Her statement appealed to me, but I did not seem able to find a way of meeting that very apparent need. I borrowed a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but because of deep-seated orthodox teaching and antagonism to what I had believed Christian Science to be, I could not read more than a sentence or two of the book at a time. All I could do was to pray that I should be guided into the path of Truth.
Then followed a period of growing domestic and business responsibility with which I felt I could not possibly keep pace. Finally I became ill with a physical difficulty which caused intense suffering. The doctors recommended complete rest, but because of my medical history would not prescribe any medicine at all. In my dilemma, I telephoned to a Christian Science practitioner, not knowing anything about what such a treatment involved. She comfortingly assured me that I was the child of God and that nothing could possibly harm me, advising me to read the ninety-first Psalm and a certain page of the textbook. This I did, wondering if that was all there was to a Christian Science treatment. In a matter of minutes I found myself joyously singing, and I realized a burden had been lifted from my consciousness. I thanked God that my prayer had been answered and that I had found Truth. Before retiring, I threw out every drop of medicine in my possession. I had a wonderful night's sleep and awakened in the morning without any pain whatsoever.
