My gratitude to God for Christian Science...
My gratitude to God for Christian Science is very deep. The truth of being, as revealed by our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, has brought untold blessings into my experience. By knowing that "whatever is governed by God, is never for an instant deprived of the light and might of intelligence and Life" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mrs. Eddy, p. 215), I successfully completed many difficult examinations during my university training. I had to learn that intelligence is not subject to limitation, is not unequally divided among God's children, but is available for all, since it is infinite, ever-present Mind, unrestricted in its enlightening activity.
During my participation in the present World War, God's loving care for His child has been strikingly revealed to me. Our Leader has spiritually defined "Japhet (Noah's son)" as "a type of spiritual peace, flowing from the understanding that God is the divine Principle of all existence, and that man is His idea, the child of His care" (ibid., p. 589). On more than one occasion this definition has served to rid my consciousness of fear. The merciless so-called forces of matter have been proved to be powerless when I have intelligently considered them in the light of the truth that God is all power.
My war duties involve the piloting of a seaplane for the Navy. One day it seemed important that I carry out a mission which required me to land my aircraft on a body of water made unusually rough by the combined action of the wind and large ocean ground swells, a none too desirable water surface on which to land a seaplane. The "still small voice" warned me not to attempt a landing, but existing circumstances seemed to make it requisite that the aircraft be brought down. Upon landing, one of my wing-tip floats was sheared off by the tempestuous sea, resulting in the almost immediate capsizing of my seaplane. However, Love directed my every move so that within a few seconds I was securely perched on the bottom side of the plane's main float, where I remained until the drifting wreckage carried me safely ashore. I was completely unharmed. Although salt water soaked my vest-pocket edition of our textbook, the truths contained therein were not dampened, and they served to give me courage and comfort during the ensuing hours. My sense of Love's ever-present peace and protection was particularly keen during this experience.
