For many years I have wanted...
For many years I have wanted to express my gratitude to God for Christian Science by testifying to my first healing, which was considered a miracle by the medical profession. In Christian Science, we are taught that healing through the right understanding of God and man is divinely natural, not miraculous.
About twenty-five years ago, I was hurt when I fell down a long flight of stairs leading to a skating rink. During the next three years I grew steadily worse, and was forced by my family to consult a noted surgeon, whose treatments were torture to me and not of any benefit. Finally I was told that I could be helped only by having a serious operation, which would leave me an invalid for at least three years; and many other frightening laws were laid down for me. I could not accept this verdict, and spent much time wondering why God could not help me. Although I could not find any hope in my church or Sunday school, where I had long been a regular attendant, I was still sure that God and my Bible could direct me. I had heard of many people being healed in Christian Science, and was led to a practitioner, who had a clear, scientific understanding of the power of Mind to heal.
At the first visit I was instantaneously healed, but for many years I knew only that I was healed, failing to realize that the work was accomplished through true prayer. I never had an operation and every law laid down for me was proved untrue. My brothers could not accept my healing, and doubted that anyone who had suffered as much as I had could become well again in a moment. I was willing to prove to them and the world that I had been healed through God's power, so went to the surgeon for an examination. He was so startled at his findings that he asked what I had done to get well. When I told him my wonderful experience in Christian Science, he said: "I don't care what it was that did the work, I am glad the knife was not used. It is hard to believe that you are perfectly well, but seeing is believing with me." Later, when my children came, after short and easy births, the surgeon was proved wrong in his prediction that they would be cripples and that I could not survive a birth.
