It has been fifty-six years since...
It has been fifty-six years since I first heard the two words "Christian" and "Science" connected in their spiritual significance. This was in 1887, when I moved to the western boundary of Nebraska, to begin my married life on a government claim. I had often wondered why the churches did not obey Jesus' command to his disciples to heal the sick and was glad to hear that this was being done. But being in good health, and happy in the anticipation of my future in the great new West, I was not personally interested at that time.
I had cause to remember Christian Science, however, three years later, when I became an invalid as the result of an accident, and serious heart trouble had developed. We had moved to a new town on the completed railroad, where there were two families interested in Christian Science, who lent me copies of The Christian Science Journal to read. At one time, while I was bedfast, my kind nurse brought me her daughter's copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, which I read each day.
I recovered sufficiently to do my housework and take care of my family, but in the spring of 1893 became so much worse with the heart trouble that I was sent back to Illinois for medical treatment. At the end of three months I went to a specialist in my childhood home in Indiana. His verdict was, "Heart too weak to undergo necessary operation."
