I am very grateful to God for...

I am very grateful to God for the help which Christian Science gave me when one of His Majesty's ships was torpedoed in the Atlantic at half past three one morning. We were alone and about one thousand miles out. The first torpedo put the radio out of action, and the sixth one fired at us sank the ship. Apart from three men who were killed by the first torpedo, the whole ship's company of some two hundred and eighty men were able to take off in boats and rafts. No information signal had been dispatched, and the auxiliary radio in the motorboat was supposed to have a radius of under two hundred miles. Nothing was in sight.

In this situation I took out my copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, looking for help. I opened it at page 26 and read: "Our Master taught no mere theory, doctrine, or belief. It was the divine Principle of all real being which he taught and practised. His proof of Christianity was no form or system of religion and worship, but Christian Science, working out the harmony of Life and Love." Not only was I helped by the realization of what real being means, but I felt the challenge in the first sentence and the comfort in the third. I cannot say how grateful I was for this help, and two days later when we were picked up I realized something of what I had learned. My feeling on sighting the destroyer was not one of relief, but only one of the gratitude that we all feel when we have proved a point in Christian Science.

With the exception of the three casualties referred to, every man of the ship's company came safely through this experience.
