In 1910 a dearly beloved sister...
In 1910 a dearly beloved sister passed on with what was pronounced tuberculosis. My grief was so great that after a time I began to manifest some of the same symptoms, and it was thought best for me to go to a higher climate. I went to New Mexico and later to Colorado. It was while staying with a sister there that I met a woman whom I admired for her courage and cheerfulness. Very soon I began to wonder what church she belonged to, for I saw she had something I did not have, and I was determined to find out what it was.
One day she told me she was a Christian Scientist. I knew something of Christian Science, and what little of it I had studied I had found to be pure and uplifting. She told me it was not necessary for me to leave my home in Nebraska to seek health in Colorado. She then asked me if I would like some literature. I answered in the affirmative, and the next morning she brought me some copies of the Sentinel and sat down for a few minutes to relate a healing of a woman who had been suffering from cancer, and whose physician had informed her that without an operation he could do nothing for her. A neighbor lent her Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and after six weeks' time she was healed. This greatly impressed me, and from that day on I was better. Soon I could eat anything that was set before me, and this was a proof to me that Christian Science heals.
My sister owned a copy of Science and Health, which I began to study with humility and an open mind. I also had absent treatments. I studied very earnestly and tried to understand the teachings of Mrs. Eddy. The Bible took on a new light and I saw that its wonderful promises are possible of present fulfillment. There were moments when a heavenly happiness came over me and I was grateful for every improvement in my condition. At the end of about five weeks I had a marvelous healing. I felt as though I were viewing a different world. I was healed of weak lungs, of goiter for which I had had help from three different physicians, of stomach trouble, constipation of years' standing, and later of organic trouble and of the need of glasses, which I had worn from the time I was fourteen years old. I have since realized that gratitude had a great deal to do with my healing.
