I should like to express gratitude...

I should like to express gratitude to God for Christian Science and for all it has meant to me, especially for "the scientific statement of being," on page 468 of Science and Health. I have for many years repeated this after the Lord's Prayer and have proved its value again and again.

Early in this war, a Canadian destroyer on which I was serving was torpedoed, but being under the protection and guidance of Christian Science, I found myself in a place of comparative safety. Shortly after the accident it was necessary for me, in the discharge of my duties, to carry out certain minor repairs to the ship in a vital spot, which necessitated my removing my life jacket. I carried out these duties, the while repeating to myself "the scientific statement of being," and found moral strength in so doing.

The greater majority of the crew were removed to another vessel, and the remainder, in all fifty-nine, were left on board to bring her, if possible, to safety. It was necessary for everyone to sleep in the officers' quarters, because they were the only accommodations left undamaged.
