Prison walls and dark, dark night
And stones so cold, so hard,
The grievous weight of heavy chains,
And iron doors close barred.

Hark! hark! Can it be a song
That Paul and Silas sing?
The joy of Christ is in their hearts,
And joy is triumphing.

O prisoners of pain and fear,
Sing, for the truth is true!
Pour out your hearts in gratitude!
Joy is unshackling you!
