Spiritual Evidence versus Material Testimony

Every conscious thought, every decision, and every outward result and condition of our lives issues from our acceptance or our rejection of spiritual evidence or material sense testimony.

Spiritual evidence is the awareness of fundamental spiritual truth, which is incapable of being perceived through the physical senses. This awareness has its counterpart in the assent to astronomical propositions on the authority of natural science. In this age no enlightened person opposes the theory that the earth revolves around the sun.

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, on page 270 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," states a Scriptural truth which was substantiated in her own time and experience, namely: "Matter and Mind are opposites. One is contrary to the other in its very nature and essence; hence both cannot be real. If one is real, the other must be unreal." Hence, material sense testimony, which is based entirely on matter, and spiritual evidence, the truth of being, perceived through the spiritual senses, are irreconcilably opposed to each other, and only one or the other, not both, can be true. And the truth of one proves the falsity of the other.
