From the age of four or five...

From the age of four or five years, I received instruction in the Christian Science Sunday School. These years of training gave me some knowledge of Science, but I did not give it the reception necessary to understand its infinite usefulness.

As a student of chemistry, I was always trying, unsuccessfully, to reconcile my laboratory observations with Christian Science. It was never clear to me why certain chemicals should not have a beneficial physiological effect. When I began my first year of graduate school, specializing in chemistry and mathematics, I found the work extremely hard, mathematics being the more difficult. By the middle of the second semester, I was so far behind that I had little hope of passing the examination. Not having taken much time from my work for social activities, I was rather lonely; and, too, I was much concerned about not having the funds to continue my work in the coming year.

These adverse conditions made me quite aware of the fact that I was utterly incapable of meeting my human needs alone. It was because of this that I first accepted Mary Baker Eddy's teachings without reservation, and could understand that the statement, "God is All," is exact. The manifest results of this changed point of view astonished me. Within a few weeks I had caught up in my work, and was able to advance so rapidly that at the end of the semester I passed an examination usually taken only by students with some four to six months' more training than I then had. At the same time, many wonderful friendships opened up for me both in the Christian Science church I was attending and at school.
