I was first attracted to Christian Science...
I was first attracted to Christian Science by the practical nature of its teaching and the clear explanation of God and man given by its Discoverer and Founder, Mary Baker Eddy, in her textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures." Orthodox teaching had up till this time failed to satisfy me in this regard.
Although I did not come to Christian Science for physical healing, it was not long before I experienced this benefit. For several years I had been a constant sufferer from catarrh of the throat, and although able to continue my daily business, I was often very much distressed by this condition, and sought to gain relief by using various material remedies, but with no success. Finally, I decided that there was no cure for this complaint, and consequently believed that I should just have to bear it. I recall at one time speaking about this condition to the minister of the church to which I belonged, and telling him of my efforts to find a material remedy. He very kindly assured me that this was sent by God to bring me closer to Him, just as St. Paul had a thorn in the flesh for the same reason. I could never really accept this explanation.
After I had been reading the Christian Science textbook for a short time, and had commenced to study regularly the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, it occurred to me one day, when the condition seemed to be aggravated and I was feeling very sorry for myself, to ask help from a Christian Science practitioner. This I did, and was advised to study the first verse of the ninety-first Psalm, "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." I obeyed this advice, and that night I read this verse from the Scriptures and tried to realize what it meant to dwell "in the secret place." I realized that I had not been doing this—dwelling in God—and I retired feeling much happier and desiring to live more closely the Christ-life. On awakening in the morning, I was free from the distressing condition, and have been well ever since. This healing occurred over nine years ago. I attribute my demonstration of health to Christian Science; and as our Leader has written (Science and Health, p. 76), "The sinless joy,—the perfect harmony and immortality of Life, possessing unlimited divine beauty and goodness without a single bodily pleasure or pain,—constitutes the only veritable, indestructible man, whose being is spiritual."
