My gratitude to our Leader, Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, for our textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," is unbounded. It has supplied my need for a practical religion for which I had been seeking since childhood. I was brought up by a Christian mother who was a devout Bible student and who believed in a God of love, but who believed also that the same God punished His children, when they sinned, by sending sickness and calamity to them, and that sometimes these things came to the innocent as well as to the guilty. This teaching I never accepted, and many times when I was a child in Sunday school, when this paradox was being taught, I would leave the class, because that was not the kind of God I wanted to hear about, and was a concept I could not accept.

Years later, when my two children were old enough to attend Sunday school, I earnestly desired that I might find a religion which would teach them the truth about a God of love. Mrs. Eddy tells us on page 1 of Science and Health that "desire is prayer," and as a result of this desire, or prayer, I was led to investigate Christian Science, which has met my every need for many years.
