The Impelling Purpose

The supposed mystery of being engages the thought of every reflective person. Whence has he come? Whither is he bound? What is the purpose of it all? But inborn in each one of us, happily, is the conviction that there exists a power, kind and beneficent, which some day will lift the veil and reveal a satisfying existence. The study and application of Christian Science confirms this conviction, for thereby doubt, uncertainty, and obstinate questionings vanish.

Faith has exerted a tremendous influence in advancing human enlightenment and betterment. It leads in paths which the light of understanding has not yet illumined. Faith brings assurance of glories unseen. Paul classifies it as one of the three outstanding imponderables which abide.

What a gloomy world this would be were we unsupported by the confidence that God is, and that He is good beyond human comprehension, unfailingly mindful of His people and having for every one of them an enjoyable and invincible purpose. "When mortal man blends his thougts of existence with the spiritual and works only as God works," states Mary Baker Eddy, "he will no longer grope in the dark and cling to earth because he has not tasted heaven" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 263).
