Many years have passed since...

Many years have passed since my introduction to Christian Science. At the time, I was being taken to the family physician several times weekly in an effort to determine the cause of severe headache, from which I had suffered continually for a year. After his consultation with other doctors, he told my mother that a thorough study of my case had given him no clue, and that if I were his child, he would try Christian Science. I have always been grateful for his honesty and lack of prejudice. He was far in advance of his time in recognizing the mental element in my trouble.

This led to our first visit to a Christian Science practitioner for treatment for me. After a few days my mother asked this sincere worker if she could heal cancer of the breast. Her reply has always stayed with us: "No, but God can, and I know He will." Treatment was begun for my mother, and in six weeks the growth had permanently disappeared. In three months I too was healed.

Other healings in my immediate family include straightening of crossed eyes in one week, healings of toxic goiter, foot tumor, influenza, acute pain from burns and injuries, and release from tortured years of semi-invalidism from arthritis of the spine and hip joint. In connection with the last-mentioned difficulty, I might add that the strictest kind of mental discipline was required to maintain its unreality. Its seemingly plausible cause, the X-ray pictures, the medical diagnosis, and also all conversation about it, each in turn was held up to the searchlight of Truth, and found to be like a tale of mythology, rather elaborate, but never touching the real selfhood of the individual. When the willingness to admit gladly that not one bit of the experience had ever touched her true being, for the simple reason that God made everything and "it was very good," the trouble vanished for lack of one to bear witness to its lies.
