Popularity— What Is It?

[Written Especially for Young People]

A DICTIONARY defines "popularity" as a "state of being esteemed by, or in favor with, the people at large." The higher meaning of the word "esteem" implies great regard founded on true worth. It is to be regretted that, all too frequently, young people and adults do not seek this higher sense of friendship, but rather are inclined to believe that social prestige and business success are acquired or aided merely through an extensive circle of acquaintances and much social activity.

It is right and proper for both young people and adults to desire and win the approval of society, but if this approval is to be of value, and is to satisfy, it must be sought in accordance with divine Principle. Neither fear of society's disapproval nor craving for its commendation should influence the actions of anyone.

In "Miscellaneous Writings" (p. 100) Mary Baker Eddy says, "Pure humanity, friendship, home, the interchange of love, bring to earth a foretaste of heaven." Friendship sweetens life and hallows the home. Its blessings do not come merely through social contact with a large circle of friends, but through thoughtful, wise selection of friends and associates from among those whose standard of thought and conduct is based on fidelity, purity, and integrity.
