I wish to add my voice to the paean of praise and thanksgiving for Christian Science.
During a period of economic depression some years ago, I found myself completely dependent upon my own efforts for a livelihood. Although reared in a Christian Science home, I had become mesmerized by a fearful sense of insecurity, because of unemployment. A selling position was offered to me, introducing a little-known product in a rural territory. My employers trained their representatives in "high pressure salesmanship" by giving them a course in sales psychology. I finished the ten-day course with the assurance of having been their most proficient pupil. However, I was unable to sell anything. Five hundred miles from home, friendless, and the last of my funds invested in two weeks' room rent, I awakened to the realization that I had been endeavoring to influence erroneously and had thus been disobeying Article VIII, Section 1, of the Church Manual by Mary Baker Eddy.
A cup of hot beverage was included in the rental, and that was my material food for ten days. Every waking hour was spent studying the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. I told no one of my plight and was miraculously sustained. After the ten days of study, I overheard my landlady express the desire for someone to assume the care of her home and of a semi-invalid for a week or so, during her absence. I volunteered my services, thanking God for this change in the situation. The day before this period of service was ended, an unsolicited purchaser bought some merchandise, enabling me to pay for transportation to my home city. The second day following the return to my home, I found employment in a new field, although the general condition of unemployment still seemed acute.
