Ilkley Gazette

Ilkley, Yorkshire, England (First Church).—The handsome building which have been erected in Wells Road, at the corner of Whitton Croft Road, were opened on January 5, 1941, when First Church of Christ, Scientist, Ilkley, held its first full service there.

In 1915, Christian Science Society, Ilkley, was organized, and recognized as a branch of The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. Steady growth and progress were evidenced, and in 1920 the society became First Church of Christ, Scientist, Ilkley. For many years Sunday services and Wednesday evening testimony meetings were held in a large house in Wells Road.

The desire to build a church of their own had been prominent with the members for some time, and in 1934 a building site was purchased. In 1935, on vote of its members, the church decided to erect a church building, and in March, 1939, work was commenced on the new edifice, which is now finished.—Ilkley Gazette.
