"Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee." This passage from Isaiah was included in the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly the week that I first applied to a practitioner for treatment, and brought to me such a sense of cheerfulness and courage that I knew I wanted to understand Christian Science and its healing power.

From childhood I had suffered from stomach trouble with all its attendant ills, and although I had treatment from some of the best physicians in our part of the state, spent several weeks in a health sanitarium, and tried change of climate and different springs whose waters were recommended as a cure for the ailment, no cure was realized. The last physician said it was useless to give me medicine any longer, that it had no healing effect; and he recommended an operation for either ulcers of the stomach or cancer, he could not say which, since X ray was not in common use at that time. The physicians were kind, conscientious men, and I know they gave all the help that material means could afford, but my release from suffering was only temporary.

Kind friends had asked me to try Christian Science, but I had refused twice. Then a neighbor, who had been so crippled with rheumatism that she could not walk the short distance from her home to mine, was healed in Christian Science; and when she came walking to see me, full of joy over her healing and sure that I, too, could be healed, I felt that I also might find health and peace from this source, so I called upon a practitioner and asked for treatment.
