The first time I heard of Christian Science was July 4, 1925. It was indeed the day I came into my independence of material remedies, for since then Truth has never failed me. I am most grateful for the healing of many difficulties and for the many proofs I have experienced of the power of Christian Science to heal and to bless.

I was in "the valley of the shadow of death," and was told by a doctor and a specialist that I had an incurable disease. They were arranging for me to go to a hospital for a major operation, which, they said, would prolong my life, though they could not promise to cure me. In deep distress I wrote to my daughter, and she advised me not to have the operation. "Try Christian Science," she said; "I know nothing about it, but I hear that it cures disease." She sent me the names of three practitioners. I called on one of them and made arrangements to visit her every day for a week. After that I put away all thought of an operation and trusted God to heal me. Day after day, at first in fear and distress, I went to our Reading Room and read over and over again a wall text from Psalms 103, verse 3: "Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases." I felt comforted, and the peace that "passeth all understanding" came to me.

As the loveliness of Christian Science grew in my thought, it expelled the fear and horror of what the doctors had told me. The meaning of the words, "O make me glad for every scalding tear" (Poems by Mrs. Eddy, p. 4), were understood. I continued to study. I felt that this practical, spiritual religion held godliness, holiness, beauty, loveliness, and joy. I was completely healed.
