About eleven years ago I was instantaneously healed of what the medical profession, with the help of an X ray, had diagnosed as gastric ulcers. This healing took place while I was attending a Wednesday evening testimony meeting in a Christian Science church for the first time. I have had no recurrence of this condition, nor have I ever felt any of the symptoms which attended the case.
I should like to tell of another important healing which took place later. A few years after my wife and our two children had become interested in Christian Science, the younger child, aged eight at the time, awoke one morning and complained of a pain in his ear. He declared the truth as he had been taught in the Christian Science Sunday School, but there was no apparent relief. He then asked his mother and elder brother for some help, which they lovingly gave; but still there was no relief from the pain. The next day a Christian Science practitioner was called on the telephone and absent treatment was given. This seemed to have some alleviating effect upon the pain, and the child continued to attend to his duties and school without further incident. The next day the same condition presented itself in a more distressing degree, and the child's mother became alarmed and called me from my work.
When I arrived home I found the child and his mother in a great state of fear, which soon made itself apparent in my own consciousness. I applied such faith and understanding as I possessed to calm my own fears and those of my wife and child. I went to my books, the Bible and the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, and soon became interested in the story of Lazarus as related in the Gospel according to St. John. These words of Jesus seemed to stand out more boldly than the rest: "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby." Turning to the textbook, I read these words by Mrs. Eddy, which appear on page 342: "The hour has struck when proof and demonstration, instead of opinion and dogma, are summoned to the support of Christianity, 'making wise the simple.'" At this point I took a higher stand for Truth. I then declared to my wife and child that we would have to depend on God or call a doctor, and they both declared that we would depend on God alone.
