The Letter and the Spirit

Mary Baker Eddy, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes on page 113 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures": "The letter of Science plentifully reaches humanity to-day, but its spirit comes only in small degrees. The vital part, the heart and soul of Christian Science, is Love." And in the same line of thought she says on pages 366 and 367: "If we would open their prison doors for the sick, we must first learn to bind up the brokenhearted. If we would heal by the Spirit, we must not hide the talent of spiritual healing under the napkin of its form, nor bury the morale of Christian Science in the grave-clothes of its letter."

In our enthusiasm to bring to mankind the message of Christian Science we should not overlook the fact that this message would lack in practical value if it were not accompanied at all times by the spirit of divine Love which gives it vitality and power.

The gospel or good news which Jesus said should be preached in all the world is unquestionably the divine Science of Mind-healing contained in the Christian Science textbook. This Science reveals first the true nature of God—infinite good—perfect, changeless, and eternal. It shows that God is the only Mind, the only creative Principle or divine intelligence. It shows that this Principle or Mind, being infinite, is all-inclusive; that it includes or embraces all that is real.
