"Principle is imperative"

ONE of the great blessings which have come to the world through Christian Science is the revelation of God as divine Principle. Mary Baker Eddy writes on page 328 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," "Understanding little about the divine Principle which saves and heals, mortals get rid of sin, sickness, and death only in belief." And she goes on to show that men need to gain "the true understanding of God in the Science which destroys human delusions about Him and reveals the grand realities of His allness."

The world in general regards a man or a woman of known integrity as an individual who can be trusted. Such a one is sometimes spoken of as a person of principle. But Christian Science reveals the fundamental, infinite divine basis of all real being as divine Principle. On page 587 of Science and Health Mrs. Eddy gives "Principle" as one of the seven synonyms in her definition of God.

As we gain some understanding of divine Principle, we better grasp the meaning of the other synonyms for God. In fact, our Leader writes on page 275 of Science and Health, "To grasp the reality and order of being in its Science, you must begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is." When at times our problems drag on unsolved, may it not be that we are not sufficiently awake to this call to "begin by reckoning God as the divine Principle of all that really is"? As it dawns on human consciousness that all true thought comes from divine Principle; that, moreover, it is possible to apply an understanding of Principle in every detail of daily affairs, a great transformation takes place in thought. Sin, disease, and death begin to lose their terrors, because it is perceived that, not being founded on Principle, but rather being the effect only of ignorance of Principle, they have no reality. This fact clearly seen at once weakens their hold, and increasing understanding must eventually completely destroy their seeming actuality.
