Topic: True Education
[F. G. Phillips, M. A., in the Sydney (New South Wales, Australia) Morning Herald]
The purpose of the new education is to regard the pupil from three points of view—as a person who will later have to work for a livelihood, as a future citizen of a democracy, and as an individual with body, mind, and spirit to develop. He must, therefore, be fitted to do most effectively the work of which he is capable, he must be brought more into contact with the world about him and realize something of his privileges and responsibilities as a member of a democracy; while, at the same time, the health of body, mind, and spirit must be progressively safeguarded. . . .
And in this new education there is a growing consciousness of conviction that we stand at the beginning of an era in which the present generation is to play an important part. The development of body, mind, and spirit recalls those stages of human progress where brute force, first dominant, yielded to intellect, which in its turn is about to give place to Spirit. In the present crisis we see intellect calling to its aid brute force in a convulsive effort for self—preservation; we are witnessing the death struggles of the beast in its unavailing contest with the power of the Spirit.
