When I first heard of Christian Science, I was living in a foreign country, working for people who were students of this subject. The religion seemed utterly queer to me, for I had only a superficial notion of what "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy contained, but the day arrived when I turned to it for help. I had been in poor health for many years and under doctors' care for various troubles, such as tonsillitis, low blood pressure, and chronic fatigue. One day I suddenly became very ill with high fever and swelling of both feet and legs, while a rash began to spread over my face and neck. My husband was also ill, and he was out of work, all of which caused us to become very much discouraged. In despair I turned to God. "Man's extremity is God's opportunity."

The thought of Christian Science and the textbook came to me, and in spite of the miserable condition I was in, I managed to attend a church service that evening. While I understood very little of the reading, the Lord's Prayer with its spiritual interpretation, as given on pages 16 and 17 of Science and Health, impressed me very deeply. I knew at once that here was the fountain of Life. My eyes filled with tears of joy, and I left the church with unspeakable peace in my heart. The following day the fever dropped and the swelling went down completely, so that I was able to resume my work.

We both gained hope and encouragement from this experience and were thus led to seek out a Christian Science practitioner, who lovingly indicated to us some of the rudiments of this vast subject. With her loving care we were able to gain a foothold on the rock of practical Christian Science.
