Like so many others, I did not reach out for Christian Science...

Like so many others, I did not reach out for Christian Science until I was submerged in the depths of despair, with its accompaniment of unhappiness, worry, ill-health, and inharmonious conditions of all sorts. It seems impossible to express adequately my gratitude for the removal of all these miseries, and for the joy, peace, and contentment I daily experience.

Having long since turned away with repugnance from the erroneous concept of an inexplicable God, who punished helpless mortals or allowed them to suffer for some inscrutable purpose of His own, I had arrived at a place where I preferred to believe there was no God, however unsatisfactory such a belief was. Imagine the immeasurable joy of finding a God one can worship with understanding and sincerity, "the Christian Science God," who, Mrs. Eddy says (Science and Health, p. 140), "is universal, eternal, divine Love, which changeth not and causeth no evil, disease, nor death."

When I first visited a practitioner's office, I was expecting to go to a hospital in a short time for a major operation which had been pronounced necessary by two reputable physicians, for both of whom I have the deepest respect. The recurrent pain was so severe at times that I looked forward to relief more than I dreaded the operation. Thought serious, this condition was so much less important in my thought than other problems that I merely mentioned it to the practitioner in passing, not even thinking about the possibility of being healed. However, I do not remember ever suffering again from that complaint after this first visit, and I never returned to a doctor or hospital, nor have I restored to medicines of any kind since that time, about four years ago.
