In Science and Health (p. 367) Mrs. Eddy speaks of "the perfume of gratitude." What a beautiful expression of a sublime quality! Words may express gratitude, but it is the heart which sings it, and in this song there is a sweet refrain of healing.

An experience I had some years ago is very sacred to me, and gratitude for it is renewed in these present times. It occurred during the last war, in March, 1918, when the submarine campaign was at its height. My wife and I had occasion to go to America. We sailed from Liverpool. Just at the time the ship was about to leave the dock I went up onto the top deck and stood alone by one of the lifeboats. As I stood there many thoughts came to me. I felt I could not outline what experiences were in front of me. Daniel had not been spared the experience of being placed in the lions' den, the three Hebrew boys had not been spared the experience of being cast into the fiery furnace, Paul had not been spared the experience of being shipwrecked, Jesus had not been spared the experience of the wilderness, but in each case they had been protected by Love's presence, and came out of the experience safe and unharmed.

At this moment there came to my consciousness this beautiful message: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee." So plain, so vivid, was the message that it almost startled me, and for a moment I felt that someone stood back of me and had spoken those comforting words. I stood still, and again came clearly that assuring message.
