Christian Science was presented to me in 1919, but it was not until 1920 that my interest in it was really awakened, through the healing of a friend who, in the last stages of tuberculosis, was brought on a stretcher to El Paso, Texas. This friend explained Christian Science to me and went with me to purchase a copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I read the textbook through very carefully, then laid it aside with the firm conviction that it contained the truth, and that I would return to it when I needed it. A year later I moved next door to a very earnest student of Christian Science, and through her influence I began to read the Lesson-Sermons in the Christian Science Quarterly and to make the truths of Christian Science my own. Then I joined The Mother Church and later a branch church.
Christian Science sustained and comforted me at the passing on of my mother and two sisters. It enabled me to realize that they had not gone to some distant, unknown place, but lived in eternal, infinite, ever-present Life.
The spiritual understanding of supply and substance has replaced the belief that supply consists of money and material things. I now know that supply is the irresistible unfolding of God's ideas, which nothing can stop. I am grateful for the many physical healings I have seen accomplished through the power of God, such as those of an abscessed tooth, boils, influenza, colds, high blood pressure, and appendicitis. Business problems have been adjusted harmoniously through my complete reliance upon God's unerring wisdom and guidance. I am grateful that pride, self-love, and self-will are being destroyed and replaced with humility and a deep desire to know God and to serve Him.
