My first healing in Christian Science was instantaneous relief from the pain, weakness, and depression of nervous prostration. Three times, during the previous five years, Christian Science had been presented to me, but not until I had reached a harrowing state of illness, financial lack, and hopelessness did I turn away from dependence on material means to trust in God.

Early one morning, after a night of pain and sleeplessness, I heard "a still small voice" gently asking, "Why don't you try Christian Science?" I could hardly wait for daylight to come, so anxious was I to get in touch with the friend who had last presented this Science to me. Work was begun by a practitioner, and I started to read my friend's copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy. A great sense of relief was felt within an hour. As the day sped on, the burning pain in head, neck, and shoulders abated; and by evening I was so free that I could play the piano accompaniment for a long rehearsal.

My return to normal health and activity was rapid. Every possible moment was spent reading Science and Health. When I came to the passage in that book (p. 137) about Peter's response to Jesus' question, "But whom say ye that I am?" the import of the disciple's reply was made so clear to me that I arose from my chair and affirmed aloud, "This is the truth!" From that time, in the fall of 1915, I have never doubted that Christian Science is the promised Comforter. For twenty-five years I have not spent a whole day in bed with illness.
