That your readers may not misunderstand the teachings...

That your readers may not misunderstand the teachings of Christian Science, let me say that although Mary Baker Eddy has written (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 218), "Neither the Old nor the New Testament furnishes reasons or examples for the destruction of the human body, but for its restoration to life and health as the scientific proof of 'God with us,'" she has also made this statement (Unity Unity of Good, p. 40): "To say that you and I, as mortals, will not enter this dark shadow of material sense, called death, is to assert what we have not proved; but man in Science never dies."

Christian Science declares that matter does not possess reality or eternality, in any of its forms; that only Spirit and things spiritual are real and eternal; and that, indeed, our essential problem is so to spiritualize our thought that belief in and dependence upon matter and things material become less and less evident, until they ultimately disappear.
