Signs of the Times

Topic: Loving-kindness

[Richard K. Morton, in the Bulletin, Providence, Rhode Island]

Happy and well-endowed indeed are those who know how to live out of the overflow of life—out of the overflow of faith, joy, good will, and purpose. There is hardly a more unlikable individual than the one who is painfully careful never to do more than is required of him....

Religion is something that must be poured out, not measured out. The great prophets and leaders of old, and Jesus of Nazareth, understood that secret: they poured out their hearts and minds and souls in the interest of their fellow men. In a high sense, they lived prodigally and lavishly. No one, I think, is likely to enter the kingdom of God as a result of carefully calculated living which never allows for any excess or overflow. Religion is always being spilled, or it is already depleted.
