I was reared in a Christian home, and was taught to kneel...
I was reared in a Christian home, and was taught to kneel in prayer at night and to read a chapter in my Bible before retiring. I am grateful that my loved ones taught me to reach out to God, but when my prayers were not answered, and the reading of my Bible gave me only the hope of a vague heaven, I fell away from both. At sixteen I was sent away to school, and I then learned something of Christian Science. A copy of the textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, was presented to me, but it seemed hard to understand, so I put it away and forgot about it for many years. I often think how much inharmony I could have been saved had I accepted its teaching at that time.
Our little girl, when three years of age, was healed of a digestive trouble that frequently brought on spasms. After one Christian Science treatment, she never had a return of the trouble. I was having treatment at the birth of our eldest son, and had practically no pain. This was considered remarkable, since our first two children had been taken with instruments and the attending physician had said that it would be impossible for me to experience a normal delivery.
I was not yet ready, however, to take a definite stand for the Christ, Truth, though I continued to read the Lesson-Sermon in the Christian Science Quarterly, purchased all Mrs. Eddy's writings, and subscribed for the literature. I remember saying to a friend that I was positive I could trust Christian Science for myself, but because my husband was not interested in it, I was afraid to give up medicine for the children.
