"A new commandment"

"A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." So spake Christ Jesus to the first disciples of Christianity. Just as the music pupil studies and applies the method of a music teacher, so the Christian Scientist strives to understand and exemplify the love of the master Metaphysician. This is done through recognizing, God, divine Principle, as Love, and growing into the stature of spiritual manhood.

Jesus' love was spiritual. The new commandment he urged upon the disciples was that they should learn to manifest the love which is the expression of God. Christian Science today commands us not to recognize as real any material concept of man, but to discern, instead, our true selfhood to be the reflection of ineffable Love. The Master rebuked sin, destroyed disease, and overcame death on the basis of their unreality. He knew that man is now and forever wholly spiritual and perfect as God's likeness, and that there is in reality no material man.

Christ Jesus' understanding of the power of Spirit was not tinged with any doubt as to the possible existence of any power apart from God. He knew of but one Mind and one real creation, the manifestation of divine Mind. Through realizing that all causation is vested in Mind, he healed the sick, thereby demonstrating the truth that mortal mind, so called, cannot tyrannize over man, for God creates and governs all that is real. The great Teacher bore constant witness to the sublime fact that God, Spirit, is all power, all presence, the infinite One.
