I took up the study of Christian Science for physical healing. When doctors had exhausted medical science in trying to heal me, I was taken to the Rush Medical College in Chicago, and before a gallery of doctors and surgeons a famous medical scientist lectured on my case. He openly admitted that they could not discover the cause of my illness. I was given up as incurable.
A friend had previously told me of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy, but I had never seen a copy. "Man's extremity is God's opportunity." I called up this friend and asked if she would lend me the book. This was thirteen years ago. When I opened Science and Health to the first chapter, on Prayer, my eyes fell on these holy words (p. 1): "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Then something loosened in me, and I wept. I could read only a few lines at a time, for all my strength was gone. To go into detail and tell my experiences from that time until now, I should have to write at great length.
As the truth unfolded in my consciousness, I learned what God is; what His nature is; what man is; what divine law is, and how it operates through man. I began to understand that God is good, all-power, Love, and that whatever is unlike good is not real, and need not be feared. This gradually freed me from fear and human will. I was dropping human will and yielding to divine law, and this process gradually freed me from fear and suffering. Words alone cannot express my gratitude and endless love and loyalty to that spiritual seer who, through obedience to divine law, has given us the "key" to the Scriptures. Eternity will tell what this truly great woman has done for mankind, because her revelation will ultimately destroy everything that is ungodlike in human thinking.
