Christian Science came into my life in the spring of 1918. I had grown up in an orthodox church, and had always questioned why healings were no longer performed as in Jesus' time. My elders could not answer my questions, but only replied that I should do as my church taught.
My first invitation to look into Science was when a friend asked my little girl to attend the Christian Science Sunday School with her girls, whereupon I promptly refused. My friend answered that she knew she had found the truth. She was so positive in her views on the subject that I was impressed, and began to investigate for myself. Results in various ways appeared. Lack and discord in the home gave place to supply and peace. I was healed of sick headaches, believed to be hereditary. I was so governed by the belief of lack that I could not make a trip to a town ten miles distant, but when I was healed by knowing that God is the source of abundance, I was able to move from the Middle West to California.
In California we made investment during the so-called depression. We were unable to keep up the payments, and a foreclosure resulted. My husband passed on while things were in this condition. A representative of the mortgage company came one day to take possession. In my extremity I turned unreservedly to God for light and guidance, and all unexpectedly a relative offered to lend me the amount necessary to bid the property in at foreclosure sale. This was done, but error seemed persistent, and on account of insufficient tenants, again I was unable to make the payments, and a second foreclosure was made.
